MCKEEVER AND TROY NAMED HEAD COACHES FOR 2012 OLYMPIC TEAM
University of California - Berkeley head women’s swim coach Teri McKeever and University of Florida head coach Gregg Troy have been selected to lead the 2012 U.S. Olympic Swim Team, USA Swimming announced via media conference call today. McKeever will serve as Head Women’s Coach while Troy has been named Head Men’s Coach.*
“Teri McKeever and Gregg Troy are two truly exceptional coaches and we are honored to have such high caliber leaders at the helm of our Olympic Team,” said Chuck Wielgus, USA Swimming’s executive director. ““Our goal at the Olympic Games is to put our athletes in an environment where they can be as successful as possible, and Teri and Gregg are the right coaches at the right time to lead Team USA to success at the Olympic Games in London.”
With the selection, McKeever becomes the first woman to serve in a head coaching role for the U.S. Olympic Swim Team. McKeever, who has coached standouts such as Natalie Coughlin, Dana Vollmer, Haley Cope and Staciana Stitts, has served on the U.S. coaching staff as a women’s assistant at the last two Olympics. In 2004, her appointment earned her recognition as the first woman in the history of the U.S. to be a part of the U.S. Olympic Swim Team’s coaching staff. Named the 2009 NCAA Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year, McKeever, who was an All-American swimmer at USC, is in her 19th year at Cal.
USA Swimming’s 2010 Coach of the Year, Troy will make his fifth Olympic appearance and first as a head coach for the United States. He served as a men’s assistant in 2008, and was women’s assistant coach in 1996. Troy also served as Olympic head coach for Thailand in 1992 and assistant coach for Guam in 1988. Troy accepted Coach of the Year honors this November after coaching multiple gold-medalist Ryan Lochte to a successful 2010 and leading the University of Florida women’s swim team to its first NCAA championship in 28 years. Over the course of his career, Troy has tutored approximately 70 Olympians and has coached athletes to more than 150 U.S. and international records. In his 11 seasons at the University of Florida, Troy has guided the Gators to more than 60 SEC titles, more than 200 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections and more than 550 All-America honors.
McKeever and Troy also served as the head women’s and men’s coach for the U.S. team at the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships. Under their guidance, the U.S. team dominated the competition, earning a total of 47 medals in pool competition – 25 gold, 15 silver and seven bronze. Team USA topped all other Nations in both the medal count and the overall team scoring.
