STATEMENT FROM USA SWIMMING ON TRAGIC DEATH OF FRAN CRIPPEN AT FINA WORLD CUP
Open water champion Fran Crippen died tragically while competing in a FINA World Cup event in Fujairah, UAE on Saturday.
USA Swimming has released the following statement.
Statement from USA Swimming on the tragic death of Fran Crippen at FINA World Cup event
USA Swimming, its employees, members, National Team athletes and coaches are deeply saddened today by the death of Fran Crippen. Fran was a champion swimmer but more importantly, a tremendous person, and he will be remembered for so many extraordinary qualities. We send our sincere condolences and deepest sympathies to the Crippen family, a family that is a treasured member of the USA Swimming family. We will continue to work with FINA, the meet host and others to determine how this tragedy occurred.
The Tragedy of Fran Crippen's Passing -- October 25, 2010

MEDIA, Pennsylvania, October 25. AT the Pan Pacific Championships in August, Fran Crippen was all smiles. He sat with his United States National Team teammates on deck, rooting for his countrymen. As his youngest sister, Teresa, had the meet of her life and earned a spot to next year's World Championships in Shanghai, big brother beamed with pride.
Fran Crippen was a swimming champion in his own right, first a standout in the pool for the revered Germantown Academy program of Dick Shoulberg, later for the University of Virginia and finally as an open-water sensation. As successful as he was in his career, the way Fran Crippen carried himself demonstrated how much he cared about others. There was his support of Teresa at Pan Pacs. Ten years earlier, he was the first to embrace his oldest sister, Maddy, after she qualified for the Sydney Olympics. The image is seared in my mind.
