LOCHTE, COUGHLIN AND PHELPS HEADLINE THE 2010-2011 USA SWIMMING NATIONAL TEAM
USA Swimming has announced the swimmers named to the 2010-2011 USA Swimming National Team. The roster features a total of 94 swimmers, including Olympic gold medalists Ryan Lochte, Rebecca Soni, Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin.
Swimmers were chosen for the USA Swimming National Team based upon their times in Olympic events at the 2010 at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships and the 2010 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships. Swimmers with the top six times in each event make the National Team, however, relay lead-offs and time trials are not included. Olympic champion Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) made the National Team in six events (100m back/200m back/200m IM/400m IM/100m free/200m free), the most events of any swimmer named to the roster this year. Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md.) qualified in five events (200m free/100m fly/200m fly/200m IM/400m IM) and Olympic stars Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) and Jason Lezak (Irvine, Calif.) both returned to the National Team roster for the first time since the 2008 Olympic Games. The veterans are joined by an array of up-and-coming talent, including Dagny Knutson (Minot, N.D.), Elizabeth Pelton (Baltimore, Md.) and Tyler Clary (Riverside, Calif.).
Athletes chosen for the 2010-2011 Open Water National Team were selected from the top six place finishers at the 2010 Open Water 10K National. This includes standout open water swimmers, including 2010 World Championship team members Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa.), Eva Fabian (Keene, N.H.), Alex Meyer (Ithaca, N.Y.) and Christine Jennings (Longmont, Colo.)
Benefits offered to USA Swimming National Team members include reimbursement for travel to USA Swimming Grand Prix meets and training camp opportunities. Select athletes are eligible for monthly assistance and Elite Athlete Health Insurance. USA Swimming also announced the 2010-2011 National Youth Team roster which can be found here. Athletes eligible to make the Youth Team must be under 18 years of age at the start date of the qualifying competitions. The athletes with the top six times in Olympic events from the combined results of the 2010 ConocoPhillips National Championships and the 2010 Speedo Junior National Championships were named to the team.
