Swimmer to Swimmer (FS Athlete Newsletter)
October 22, 2008
Athletes,
This year at the USA Swimming national convention a few major changes happened. The three major changes that I feel you all should know about are as follows. Going into effect May 2009, at all age group competitions, 12 & under kids are not allowed to wear a suit that goes below the knee, past the shoulder, or above the neck. Another rule passed was that pace clocks must be turned on during warm ups and do not have to be turned off during the meet. Lastly, officials do not have to put the name on DQ slips when filled out and turned in. These were the main topics discussed during the USA-S House of Delegates meeting and all were passed. In the athletes meetings, a major concern was how to get more athletes informed and involved in this convention itself. It has been made clear that not many athletes know much about convention and how valuable their participation is in the sport. New ways of getting you all involved have been presented and are being taken up by the LSC Athlete Zone Representatives.
This year at the Florida Swimming convention, a few things were discussed and changed. Within the officials committee there were a few pieces of legislation that were brought up and passed in the FS House of Delegates. The draft term limit was passed unanimously. A change within the draft term limit was that if the Area Representative cannot attend a Technical Planning or FS Board meeting, they can give someone of their choice from their area their vote. However, if this is needed, the person’s name taking the vote must be sent to the Chairman in an advance of the meetings. Another topic discussed was the long course Junior Olympics. Sherwood Watts proposed to stay with the same format that was used in the past. The 2009 JO time standards will stay the same as last year. Reasons for not doing the four-day format were because of getting too much criticism for a full four-day format. He also proposed ideas for how to run the meet faster…flyovers or chase starts. Other ideas brought up by the board were possibly starting the meet Thursday at noon. A major topic that was brought up during the FS House of Delegates was whether or not we should bump up entry costs per dive. This created major discussion between small clubs and bigger clubs because bigger clubs need more money to run a facility than smaller clubs. Lastly, the rules passed at the USA Swimming convention were discussed briefly to inform all clubs of what will be going into effect as of May 2009.
If you have any questions about anything please don’t hesitate to e-mail me at fiuswim12@yahoo.com.
Thanks!

The contents of such a parent’s diet (high fat & protein and low carbohydrates) may have started to make up their young swimmers’ diets. A diet low in carbohydrates will lead to poor swimming performance in both practices and meets. Click Here for an article about swimmers and the Atkins Diet to share with your team parents. |
